Abstract
Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW), less than 2,500 g, is a global public health problem associated with increased risks of morbidity and mortality. In Colombia, despite progress, regional disparities persist, such as in Norte de Santander. Objective: To analyze the socioeconomic factors that influence the prevalence of LBW in children born at the Erasmo Meoz University Hospital, between July and November 2023. Methodology: Positivist paradigm, inductive empirical approach. Descriptive, observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study; with data sources or information obtained from the review of medical records and the questionnaire to 86 mothers of LBW newborns, from the target population. Descriptive statistics were used for the organization and presentation of the data, in graphic and analytical form, which allowed observing trends and verifying the objectives achieved, as well as inferential statistics, to estimate correlation between some variables. Results: The sociodemographic profile of the mothers showed a marked tendency towards youth (58.1% between 18 and 25 years) and a low educational level (44.1% with secondary education). The population was diverse, with a majority of 65.1% Colombians and 34.8% Venezuelans. The socioeconomic stratum 3 predominated (52.3%) and a maximum educational level of secondary (44.1%). In addition, a high prevalence of obstetric complications was identified, including preeclampsia (23.2%), placenta previa (47.6%), vaginal hemorrhage (6.9%), gestational syphilis (19.7%) and urinary tract infections (36%). Conclusion: Low birth weight is a complex and multifactorial public health problem in the city of Cúcuta. The results obtained highlight the urgency of strengthening prevention and comprehensive pregnancy care programs in the region. Determining importance of socioeconomic factors, such as educational level and income; obstetric factors, such as maternal age and pregnancy complications, in the occurrence of this adverse event.
