History, morphology, conservation status and cultural context of the Colombian Fine Hound

Abstract

The Colombian Fine Hound (SFC), colloquially known as chapolo, bramador, tinajero, or aullador, is the first formally recognized native dog breed in Colombia. This article examines its history, morphological characteristics, conservation status, and cultural context through a literature review of scientific, technical, historical, and institutional sources. Its origins are analyzed based on hunting dog populations introduced from Europe and North America during the colonial and republican periods, as well as the process of functional selection that has taken place over more than two centuries in different regions of the country. Available zoometric studies show a relatively homogeneous phenotype, characterized by a long-bodied build, long ears, a talent for tracking, and adaptation to different geographical conditions. The breed’s path to recognition includes its acceptance by the Colombian Kennel Club in 2015 and, most recently, provisional recognition granted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale on February 11, 2026, under FCI Standard No. 376 (Fédération Cynologique Internationale-FCI). This recognition incorporates the SFC into the international cynological nomenclature, although it does not yet constitute definitive recognition. At the same time, challenges persist regarding the size of the registered population, the conservation of genetic diversity, the decline of its traditional hunting role, and a lack of awareness of the breed outside certain rural contexts. Its history and continued existence allow it to be interpreted as a biocultural resource associated with the practices, knowledge, and transformations of Colombian rural society. It is concluded that its recent international recognition expands the possibilities for raising awareness and conservation, but must be accompanied by genetic research, genealogical registration, responsible breeding, and strategies for cultural appropriation.
