Abstract

Gothic architecture in Portugal emerged as a unique adaptation of the broader European Gothic style, first introduced by the Cistercian Order in the 13th century. It evolved from early austerity to the richly decorative Manueline style, inspired by Portugal’s maritime discoveries. Its development reflects a combination of French, Castilian, and local influences, as well as the political, economic, and spiritual growth of the country during the Middle Ages. Gothic architecture in Portugal remains a defining element of the nation's cultural and historical heritage.
